Change in the Healthy People 2030 Objectives

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is soliciting written comments regarding the Healthy People 2030 objectives. This is important to know because the objectives for breastfeeding have changed since Healthy People 2020. The public comment period will be open from December 3, 2018 through January 17, 2019.The proposed set of objectives has only one for breastfeeding:  MICH-2030-15 Increase the proportion of infants who are breastfed exclusively through 6 months. All of the other breastfeeding objectives from the HP 2020 set have been removed. The proposed HP 2030 program has reduced the number of objectives, "Because stakeholders have indicated a desire for a more specific and targeted initiative in the next decade." The "stakeholders" were not identified.Actually, the specific breastfeeding objectives were removed, leaving only the one general goal. This is concerning because the HP 2020 objectives were a set of action items that directly contributed to improving breastfeeding initiation, duration and exclusivity. Breastfeeding advocates may wish to provide comments at https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/About-Healthy-People/Development-Healthy-People-2030/Public-Comment.The public comment period will be open from December 3, 2018 through January 17, 2019.
