Sharla’s passion for human lactation began in 1994 at the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied nutrition and dietetics. Her studies and training continued as a midwifery student; a breastfeeding mother of two; a La Leche League Leader; a birth and postpartum doula; and a public health nutritionist and CLC at the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). She earned a Master of Public Health degree in Maternal and Child Health from Boston University.

Baystate Medical Center supports families throughout the lactation journey. Our lactation staff can assist you before delivery with prenatal outpatient services and breastfeeding education. While in the hospital you will receive an in-room postpartum visit by our lactation staff, and support for you and your baby while in the special care nursery or children's hospital.
